From Alta, Anniken and her family take you by road to their farm about 30 minutes away. You ride a Norwegian Fjord horse sleigh or covered carriage for 30 to 40 minutes, then warm up in a Sami lavvo with coffee, pastries, and cured meat before meeting the sheep and horses.

“The pony sleigh experience was wonderful from start to finish. Our driver Rune was welcoming and informative. Anniken and her family made every part of the experience enjoyable from the sleigh ride, snack and hot drink to meeting the ponies and sheep. The family are amazing and their love and care for the animals lovely to see. Communication prior to the trip was swift and helpful. I would recommend this very highly. It was certainly a highlight and wonderful memory of our trip to Norway.”

Haugesund Viking Cruise – The Viking Farm and Viking Planet

2.Haugesund Viking Cruise – The Viking Farm and Viking Planet

★★★★★★★★★★4.3 · 37 reviews · 3 hours · from $156

Take a comfortable boat from Haugesund’s cruise terminal to the Viking Farm at Avaldsnes, where costumed guides explain Viking life through stories and activities. Return by boat for an hour at the digital Viking Planet museum. An English-speaking local guide adds context on Norway, energy, and sustainability.

“The Viking farm was very informative but we only had about 20 mins to look around - which was fine as there wasn't much to see to be honest. I was expecting more exploration and hands on activities. Our guide was brilliant on the boat trip which was interesting and with beautiful scenery. The Viking planet was very small and totally digital. Really expensive for what was in there and we were done in about 40 mins. Again, I was hoping for more. Quite a disappointing day out really”

“What an experience! We were driven to a Norwegian farm and got to see the sheep and learn how they work the farm. We took a horse driven ride for a few miles and saw some amazing countryside. We then were treated to a roaring fire in a teepee with a sample of Norwegian food and hot and cold drinks. The family joined us and told us some of the history and stories of the family farm. I felt I learned so much about Norway and how people make their living. I would definitely recommend this tour. The family operating this tour was awesome.”

Meet near Haugesund’s cruise port for a guided boat ride through Karmsundet to Bukkøy’s Viking Farm, then visit The Viking Planet. Expect local history, reconstructed longhouses, a boat house, forest paths, and a digital museum. The three-hour outing suits families and Viking fans, though part of the farm visit may involve a stationary talk.

“It was a nice opportunity to see a Viking village. We were very disappointed to stand in one spot in the village for about 45 min for a lecture rather than being toured around. We gathered this was due to it being used by a school group. We felt the tour should be greatly reduced or cancelled in this case. The tour guides were good. No complaints in that regard.”
